2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. sugar 1/3 c. shortening 1 c. buttermilk Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar into a medium-size bowl. Using a pastry blender, or two knives, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well; add buttermilk. Using fork, stir quickly just until dough follows fork around bowl. Dough should be soft. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently 10-12 times. Pat or roll dough 1/2 inch thick. Dip cutter in flour. Cut dough straight down; do not twist cutter. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven 12-15 minutes or until light brown. Makes 12-15 biscuits. |
