OATMEAL CAKE WITH ICING 
1 c. oatmeal
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. boiling water
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon

ICING:

1 stick soft butter
1 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. milk
1 c. coconut
1/2 c. nut meats
1 tsp. vanilla

Pour boiling water over the oatmeal and soda. Let stand until cool. Cream together the shortening, sugars and eggs. Stir in flour, spices and vanilla. Add oatmeal mixture. Bake in 9 x 13 pan for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool cake slightly, then pour on icing.

Icing: Combine ingredients. Spread on cake and place under broiler watching carefully until golden crown. Let cool and serve.
