1/2 tsp. nutmeg 2 c. flour 1/4 tsp. salt 3 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tsp. almond extract Fat for frying 2 tbsp. sugar Confectioners' or granulated sugar Sift the dry ingredients and add wet ingredients; stir with fork and knead well. If too soft, add flour. Cover with bowl; let rest 1 hour. Divide dough into 2 portions. Roll paper thin. Cut into 3/4 inch strips, 5 inches or so long. Make into bow knots and fry a few at a time until golden brown and puffy (about 2 minutes). Drain and sprinkle sugar over. These were made the Thursday before Lent and during the "Great Depression" only granulated sugar was used. |
