1/2 c. shortening (1/2 butter)
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix thoroughly. Sift and measure 1 cup flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add to above mixture. Roll into little balls; dip in partially beaten egg whites and roll in finely chopped nuts. Bake at 375 degrees for 5 minutes.

Remove from oven and press center with clothes pin. Return to oven, bake 8 minutes longer. Cool and fill centers with jelly or jam.
