APFEL KUCHEN
1/2 c. Crisco
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 c. chopped apples, chunks
1/2 c. nuts

TOPPING:

1/2 c. light brown sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. flour
2 tbsp. melted butter

Cream sugar and shortening; add egg. Sift dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture alternated with the milk and vanilla. Add apples. Nuts may be added to this mixture or added to topping.

Topping mixture is crumbled to the size of a pea and added to the top of the batter after it is placed in the pan. Mixture is placed in a 9x13 inch greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. I prefer to put the nuts in the topping.

I used a springform instead of the pan that the recipe suggested, just becuase my sister said that's how her Austrian friend did it, and she made it all the time. I guess I should have realized that changing it would produce unpredictable results, but what happened was that the batter crept up the sides of the pan in the oven and covered up the topping. If you feel inclined to use a springform for this recipe, add the topping after it's already been in the oven awhile, so that you can still see it when it's done.
