ORANGE NUT BREAD 
1 lg. orange
Boiling water
1 c. raisins or dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1 beaten egg
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Squeeze juice from orange into 1 cup measure and fill cup with boiling water to equal 1 cupful. Put orange rind through food chopper and add enough raisins or dates to equal 1 cupful.

Place orange date mixture in a mixing bowl and add the orange juice and boiling water. Stir in soda. Add sugar, shortening and vanilla. Add beaten egg, then flour which has been sifted with salt and baking powder. Beat well. Stir in nut meats. Place in greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool in pan before slicing.
