DATE BARS OR DREAM BARS 
CRUST:

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease a 9-inch square pan.

Blend butter, brown sugar and flour. Spread on bottom of pan.

Bake at 325°F for 20 minutes.

FILLING:

1 cup dates, finely chopped
1/4 cup water
1 cup chopped nuts
2 egg whites
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour

Mix water and dates in a small saucepan. Cook and cool. Add chopped nuts. Beat egg whites until stiff.

Mix together brown sugar, salt, baking powder and flour. Beat into egg whites. Fold this mixture into the date mixture until well blended. Spread over baked crust.

Bake at 325°F for 40 minutes. Cut into squares while warm.
