1 c. butter 1 c. sugar 1 c. molasses 1 c. sour milk 4 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. salt 5 c. flour with additional to roll Cream sugar, shortening, and molasses GOOD. Stir in sour milk. Stir in sifted flour and spices. Chill dough for 2 hours. Roll on floured board 1/4 inch thick. Cut with 3 inch cutter. I used an empty Spam can of oblong shape. Bake on ungreased sheet, 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Do not overbake. Cool and frost. FROSTING: Sprinkle 1 envelope of plain gelatin (Knox) over 3/4 cup cold water in a saucepan. Let set a few minutes. Then add 3/4 cup sugar and let boil 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add 3/4 cup powdered sugar. Beat at high speed with mixer until it thickens (4 to 5 minutes). Add 3/4 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 cup additional powdered sugar. Beat until smooth. Frost generously. Let set 2 hours before packing in airtight containers. DO NOT OVER BEAT FROSTING as it will get too hard before you finish spreading. |
