TAMALE PIE 
CORNMEAL CRUST:

5 c. water
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. chili powder
2 1/2 c. yellow cornmeal

Combine cold water with other ingredients in a saucepan. Over medium heat, cook until thickened (about 15 minutes). Stir frequently. Line the sides and bottom of a buttered 2 quart rectangular casserole with 2/3 of the cornmeal mixture. Reserve the remainder.

TAMALE PIE FILLING:

2 tbsp. shortening
1 lb. ground beef
1/2 c. chopped celery
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tbsp. chili powder
1 c. chopped green pepper
1 c. chopped onion
2 c. (1 lb.) canned tomatoes
1 c. cream style corn
2 tsp. salt
1 c. grated cheese

Melt shortening in a skillet. Brown meat and add remaining ingredients except cheese. Simmer about 20 minutes. Place in casserole. Top with remaining crust. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes.
