This was terrific! I used 3 frozen chicken breasts (could've used more chicken as it was pretty saucy) and it was so tender. The chicken shredded apart at the end of cooking and we ate it as pulled chicken sandwiches. We froze the leftovers and it was just as good the second time!

it was mean as yum, I used 12 frozen chicken drumsticks, it was still very saucy but good. Just served on top of rice!

Used 2 frozen chicken breast and 6 legs.... I drained off the liquid from the chicken before adding the coke/bbq sauce, didn't use all the coke added alittle at a time and it wasn't saucy.... Unbelievable favor.. Yumo

Not much direction here as far as a recipe goes so this is what I did.

Cut up the chicken, roughly 5 lbs., into small pieces. I put in the entire 18 oz. bottle of BBQ sauce and mixed in the 10 oz. of Coke. I added a little water to the bottle of BBQ sauce to exhaust what was still on the inside of the container, perhaps 2-4 oz. It didn't list how much time to cook this recipe so I started with 2-2 1/2 hours on High and then switched to Low for the remaining 2 1/2 hours. The chicken was very dry and not very tasty. It reminded me of some local fast food places that have food sitting around for hours and tasted as if you were the last one served before closing time. I took a little bit out of the crock pot and added some BBQ sauce, mixed it up so that the consistency was a little thicker and put it in the refrigerator. I don't have too much hope that it will be better but I'm not about to waste 5 lbs. of chicken because it's dry and not too tasty. I'm open for comments as to what I might have done wrong but having little to no direction other than what starts this comment, what more could I have possibly known as a crock pot beginner.

Hi Mark,

The original (older) Crockpots use low and slow cooking methods and the heat these pots produced was barely imperceptible. Newer Crockpots have much higher heat and the high setting would probably have been too much.

Some slow cookers now have heat probes that allow for setting the cooking temperature and I prefer to use a temperature setting of between 150F-160°F for slow cooking, especially for soups and roasts.

Hope this helps!

Typically in a Crock, you can leave the chicken in it's original state with no additional cutting. Cutting into smaller pieces helps it cook faster, combined with the high heat setting probably did dry it out. I usually put the entire piece (fat, meat, bone) in to cook.

I have never heard of adding coke, I am going to try this I bet it will be a very economical meal using a whole chicken and taking the meat off after cooking. Do you think I can use a stewing chicken?

Actually, I think the directions are pretty clear. I totally understand for a new crockpot user it might be confusing though. The recipe calls for chicken cut or whole. That doesnt mean you should cut into pieces; it means pieces cut from the chicken like the legs, thighs, breast, etc. It also said to cook on low while at work; that's assuming you work a typical 8 hour work day & includes extra time to commute. I think you should give it another try, especially if you liked the flavor despite the texture of the chicken.

This was very easy and delicious. I used 4 chicken breasts and it was still pretty saucy. Next time I'll try using 5 ounces of Coke and 6 chicken breasts. I cooked it on low for 6 hours, removed the chicken and shredded it and then returned it to the sauce for one more hour to season the meat all the way through. The chicken was tender and flavorful. I highly recommend this easy recipe!

I did 6 chicken breasts and 10 oz of Coke. Super easy and tasty. Think next time I will cut the Coke down to 5 oz. (sauce was too runny) and add a few spices as it was a bit bland.

I used a family pack a boneless chicken breast and added an additional 1/2 bottle of BBQ sauce - when it was done I took 2 forks and pulled the chicken - OMG it was the best "pulled chicken sandwiches" EVER! My husband (who rarely gives me a compliment on my cooking) told me that it was delicious! I can't thank-you enough for the recipe! I'll be making this dish again and again!

Wasn't too sure if I'd like it. Didn't expect my daughter to like it at all. Happy to say, we loved it!!! She was just sad I didn't make more. Definitely a keeper!

Cooking this as we speak.

Used 10-12 fl. oz. of Coke, mixed in a 18 oz. bottle of Sweet Baby Rays (Original), and some extra SBR's Honey (4-6 oz.) and had nice consistency. I did comptimplate adding some BBQ spice rubs that I use for smoking or even a lil liquid smoke but decided against it.

Just a FYI unless your getting boneless chicken breast for $1.99 OR less, then you should be using a cheaper cut of meat. I am using whole leg quarters. All that was done is rinse and cut at the thigh/leg joint. Started @ 6am on "low" and will be ready once I get home.

I suspect it to be "saucy" but with things that have sugar (soda and BBQ sauce), you can't have too little. Also once tender and "falling off the bone" I will de-bone, and put back into sauce to get a good final coat.

Served with Bush's Grilling beans, on potato bread buns!

Update:

Finished and I have some observations.

1) Most people can dial back the amount of Coke used, since how much chicken and size of the pot was not stated by the original author. One can assume enough to fit a whole chicken....

2) IF chicken has skin, you can remove it ahead of time but do not get boneless/skinless breast or thighs. Bone-in Thighs and Drums worked the best.

3) Cooking time will vary but 8 hours is too much in most cases, your looking @ more like 6ish as you can over slow cook chicken.

4) Use more BBQ sauce during cooking at add some at the end when you shred and mix up the meat. Having some spice rub on hand helps a great deal as it adds flavor.

So to summerize.

Add more BBQ Sauce.
Use Less Coke
Use Thighs and legs
Use BBQ spice rubs while cooking and final shredding stage.
Use some Liquid Smoke to add some of that "wood-smoked" taste.
If you can, use more chicken as it does cook down.

Trust the crock pot. It is not called slow cooker for nothing. With a little practice and more trust, anything could happen -- like good stuff. There are even cake recipes for slow cookers. Try it!! If the instructions say H I G H, then .... for ...., trust it! One caution -- I tried a pudding cake in pot with no temp gauge -- not a good idea.

This was super simple and delicious! I just used frozen chicken breast strips that I had in the freezer and it turned out great! It would have also made a great pulled chicken type sandwich as I have seen mentioned previously! Can't go wrong with this quick and easy recipe!
