HOMEMADE BREAD 
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 c. warm water
4 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. shortening
4 c. all-purpose flour
Melted butter

Mix yeast with warm water and 3 tablespoons sugar. Let it dissolve for about 1/2 hour until foam is formed. In a separate bowl, mix salt, shortening, 1 tablespoon sugar, and flour. Knead for 10 minutes. The mixture should be sticky. Stir both mixtures together. Put into a greased bowl in the form of a ball and let rise for 2 hours.

With your fist, punch down dough. Flatten the dough out on a counter to the same width as a 1 1/2 quart loaf pan and twice the length. Roll the dough up and place in the well greased pan so both sides of the dough are touching the pan sides. Let rise for 1 hour in a warm spot. Brush top with butter and bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 45 minutes.
