MA DOHERTY'S FRUIT CAKE 
1 lb. seeded raisins
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. shortening
1/2 c. citron, candied cherries, etc.
1 c. walnut meats (sliced)
2 well beaten eggs
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Wash raisins and cook with sugar and water for five minutes, then add shortening and let cool. Add additional fruit and nuts. Beat eggs thoroughly and add sifted dry ingredients and fruit mixture alternately. Bake in medium oven (325 degrees F.) for 1 1/2 ours. Pan to be well greased and floured.
