CARAMEL APPLE SQUARES 
1 3/4 c. unsifted flour
1 c. quick cooking oatmeal
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. cold butter

Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in butter until crumbly. Reserving 1 1/2 cups crumbs. Press remainder on bottom of 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

In double boiler, melt (stir often) : 1 can (14 oz.) condensed milk (not evaporated milk)

Over baked crust, spread evenly:

Top with caramel mixture. Add 1 cup chopped nuts to reserved crumbs and spread over contents of pan. Bake 20 minutes or until set. Serve warm with ice cream if desired. Serves 12-15.
