ENGLISH TOFFEE 
1 c. sugar
1/2 lb. butter
3 tbsp. water
1 tsp. vanilla
4 plain chocolate bars
3/4 c. chopped pecans

DO NOT MAKE WHEN HUMID! Boil sugar, butter and water for 10 minutes. Stir constantly, cook until turns toffee brown, about 290 degrees on candy thermometer. Remove from heat, add vanilla. Pour thin layer in buttered 9 x 13 pan. Lay chocolate candy on top. Spread evenly with knife. Sprinkle with pecans and press. Chill thoroughly and break.
