OLD-TIME TOMATO BAKE 
1/2 loaf Italian bread
4 tbsp. butter
1/4 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. salad oil
2 medium onions, sliced
1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes
1 1/2 tsp. sugar

Cut bread in 1/2-inch cubes. In skillet, cook bread in butter with basil until golden. Remove and wipe skillet clean.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Cook onions in oil until golden. Stir in tomatoes with liquid, sugar and salt. Heat to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. In a 2-quart casserole, spoon 1/2 of tomato mixture, then 1/2 of bread cubes. Repeat and bake 15 minutes.
