SUGAR COOKIES 
1 1/2 c. white sugar
1 c. (2 sticks) butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar

Cream sugar and butter. Mix in egg and flavorings. Sift dry ingredients and stir into first mixture. Chill 2 to 3 hours.

Roll 1/4-inch thick and cut as desired. Sprinkle sugar on cookies before baking, if desired. Bake at 375°F for 5 to 8 minutes.

Makes 5 dozen.
