PLUM COFFEE CAKE 
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. milk
6 to 8 fresh ripe purple plums
1/2 c. light brown sugar, firmly packed
3 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 tbsp. melted butter
1/4 c. chopped nuts (if desired)

Cream together the 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter, egg, and vanilla. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternately add milk and dry ingredients to butter mixture. Spread into 9 inch square pan (greased and floured) and top with rows of plum slices. Combine rest of ingredients until crumbly (not smooth) and sprinkle over the plums. Bake in preheated oven (350 degrees) about 35 minutes until done. Cut into squares.

Peaches may be substituted for plums if plums are not available. Do not peel plums but you need to peel peaches!!
