OLD TIME STEAMED BROWN BREAD 
2 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rye meal
1 1/2 heaping teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup Karo corn syrup
3 1/2 cups sour milk or buttermilk

Sift the dry ingredients together until thoroughly mixed. Add the Karo syrup and stir in the buttermilk. Mix well and steam for four hours in an Instant Pot or Ninja Foodi using the steam setting.

Note: Do not substitute plain milk for the buttermilk; if you don't have buttermilk, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar to each cup milk to make sour milk. The acidity works with the baking soda to help the brown bread rise.
