GRANNY'S SPICE CAKE 
2 c. water
2 c. sugar
1 c. raisins
3/4 c. shortening
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves

May drain cherries and use juice, add water to make 2 cups.

Put all ingredients in medium saucepan. Stir well and bring to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and let cool (this can be done day or night before) to room temperature, add 3 level cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 3/4 cup cut maraschino cherries, 1/2 cup diced dates and 1 cup nut meats. Blend well. Bake in greased and floured bread or muffin pans at 350 degrees for 1 hour. If using mini loaves or muffins, bake 1/2 to 3/4 hour.
