POWDERED SUGAR COOKIES 
1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Pinch salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 c. flour, sifted

Cream sugar, butter and shortening until smooth. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Sift together dry ingredients and stir into the creamed mixture. Chill until stiff enough to handle. Roll into balls about the size of walnuts and place on greased cookie sheets. Flatten balls with a fork and dip balls in colored sugar if desired. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 5 dozen.
