WORLD WAR I CHOCOLATE CAKE 
2 sqs. bitter chocolate
2 tbsp. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. cold water
1 tsp. vanilla

ICING:

2 c. powdered sugar
1 heaping tbsp. butter (about the size of an egg)
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt

Melt chocolate and butter together; add sugar and beaten egg. Sift dry ingredients together and add to chocolate mixture. Add water and vanilla; beat well. Batter will be very thin. Pour into a greased 8 or 9 inch pan and bake in moderate oven (325 to 350 degrees) about 30 to 35 minutes.

Icing: Blend melted butter and sugar; add egg, vanilla, and salt. Beat until light and fluffy.
