DATE PINWHEELS 
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
3 eggs
4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugars; add eggs; mix. Sift dry ingredients, add to shortening mixture with the vanilla. Roll dough, spread with filling. Roll up like a jelly roll. Chill in refrigerator. Slice and bake in a 375 degree oven until medium brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Cut dough in thin slices.

FILLING:

1 lb. chopped dates
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water

Mix and cook until thick. Cool. Spread on cookie dough.
