“AMBROSIA SALAD” IS IN:

AMBROSIA SALAD 
2 (20 oz. ea.) cans pineapple chunks, drained
2 (15 oz. ea.) cans mandarin oranges, drained
2 (10 oz. ea.) jars maraschino cherries, drained
1 (14 oz.) bag coconut flakes
5 oz. (1/2 bag) mini marshmallows
4 oz. sour cream
16 oz. Cool Whip

Combine sour cream and Cool Whip. Fold in all other ingredients. Chill covered for at least 2 hours.

I am 72 years old and learned to make this recipe in junior high home ec. It is so delicious! The younger generation is totally unfamiliar with it until they have it at my house. Some of them call me Ambrosia. So funny. Good to see it in print.

Just made a version of this tonight. I use chilled jello with fruit cocktail, a jar of cherries, a can of oranges, bowl of whip cream and mix it all together. Plan on using the coconut and sour cream next time. THEN I think it will be PERFECT!!

Loved It! Couldn't remember how my Mother made this, but I sorta of remembered something with the sour cream and Cool Whip. This was it!!! Delicious! The sour cream helps make it not quite as sweet, Perfect!! Thanks for the recipe. I cut the recipe in half for smaller family gatherings.

Another name is 5 cup salad... My choices are.. .Whole bag of mini marshmallows, 2-cans of pineapple tidbits-drained, 2 small cans of mandarin oranges drained & cut up, one bag of small light flaky coconut, 16 ounces of sour cream, stir it up in bowl and leave in fridge over night-best taste ever and they will eat it before - during and after the meal... I take maraschino cherries and cut up in to little bits and sprinkle it over the tops for color!

I love ambrosia salad as does my family and this is a good recipes but I never use cool whip because cool whip is nothing but bad oils and also the one main oil is palm tree oil and due to the destruction and farming practice of growing the palm trees I do not buy anything with palm tree oil in it. replace the cool whip with real whipped cream your salad will taste better, better for your health, and it is better for the environment.

I use Greek vanilla yogurt in mine in place of sour cream or plain yogurt, still not too sweet just right. Just stir yogurt and cool whip together and fold in drained fruit, add marshmallows, coconut, and nuts about 1/2 hour before serving.

I've been making this ambrosia salad for a few years now whenever there are potlucks at my job. Its so easy and its always a hit. I do not add cherries and substitute green apples for more crunch. I was hesitant to use the sour cream but am glad I did. It gives it more zing. Super yummy!!

I gave this a 3 because it was a little dry and the cool whip. the changes are, use pineapple tidbits instead of chunks, a bag of coconut is better, use the whole 10 oz. bag of mini marshmallows. and 1 whole 16 oz. tub of sour cream. and never use cool whip, never, never, never! cool whip is all unhealthy oils, like palm tree oil, that are both bad for you and the planet. the oils are whipped in to a completely unhealthy foam. use real whipped cream, your salad will come out much better and healthier.
