HOMEMADE BREAD
1 c. milk
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. butter
1 c. warm water
1 pkg. yeast
5 1/2 c. unsifted flour

Scald the milk; stir in sugar, salt, and butter. Cool to lukewarm. Measure the warm water into a large warm bowl. Sprinkle in the yeast; stir until dissolved. Stir in lukewarm milk mixture. Add 3 cups of flour; beat until smooth. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Turn onto a floured board; knead for 2 minutes or until dough is manageable and can be formed into a ball. Place in a greased bowl and grease the top. Cover and let rise until double, about 1 hour. Punch down and shape into rolls or loaves. Place in greased pans. Cover and let rise until double, about 1 hour. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes or until done. Serves number varies.
