This recipe is great! I mixed the cushed pineapple and cherry pie filling together first then poured into the pan works just as well.

Just make whatever kind of cake you like first then literally take you hands and mash all the ingredients you want together in a bowl so it's all mixed up. Put plastic wrap over top of bowl and put in refrigerator until it's cold. Tastes delicious, especially since you make it the way YOU want it!!!

My cousin (who is not a Betty Crocker) made this and it was the best thing in the world. Kudos. Please do try this if you haven't

My sister always made this, especially when I was in a hurry and didn't have time to make a dessert for work. She passed away in November, so now when I make it I call it Patty's dessert in a hurry. It always gets rave reviews. I have been told to try it with apple pie filling, then spice cake and nuts, all over the pineapple. I think that will be great for a special fall desert.

I love this recipe. My daughter-in-law melts a stick of butter/margarine and mixes it with the box of cake mix. (like you would for a graham cracker crust) then sprinkle it over the cherries and pineapples. Ensures butter is distributed evenly. Yum yum yum

 Jo-Ann (New York) replies:
I use chopped walnuts and I melt the butter and pour (drizzle) over the top. It seems to work better than just laying the butter on the top.

 Sheri (Ontario) replies:
The best way to deal with the butter... cool a block in the fridge and use a vegetable peeler to peel off layers of butter and lay over top of the cake! This way all of the cake is moistened and cooked and your not left with uncooked cake batter on top.

I have made this recipe by draining the juice from the pineapple and using nstead of about half of the butter for the top - you can really cut some of the fat this way, and it still turns out great!

I have made this EXACT recipe for probably 20 years... My daughter wanted me to post directions on her facebook for her friends - and I could NOT remember how long I used to bake it (it's been a few years since I've made it)... so I googled "dump cake" to see if I could find something similar... I was so surprised and DELIGHTED to find this exact recipe. If you like cherries and pineapple - you will LOVE this recipe - and it's SO SO So easy! Thanks for posting it!!!

I have made this cake for years. A little yummy twist is to use a dark chocolate cake mix and use two cans of cherry's without the pineapple. I have also used chocolate chips to make it really rich.

I used to hate birthday cake - the kind from the grocery store with the thick layer of nasty icing - so I requested to have this on my birthday instead. So glad the recipe is out here!! It's the BEST!

Have been making this cake for years for our 55 Alive Driving Class. Try melting the butter and pouring evenly over the cake before adding Brown Sugar, coconut, and nuts. It is delicious and I always get a lot of compliments.

Really quick and easy dessert that will serve 10 or more people.

VARIATION: I have also used canned sliced peaches that I chop in half or thirds with scissors and 1-1/2 to 2 cup blueberries - fresh or frozen. I drained part of peach liquid since I used frozen berries; Spiced with cinnamon and ginger (I used powdered and 1 tsp. fresh grated). I added 1 cup of Oat Bran to yellow cake mix for fiber nutrition and to tone down the sweetness of mix. Then I used chopped walnuts and almonds.
