WALDORF ASTORIA CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vinegar
2 tsp. cocoa

Mix vinegar and soda; let stand. Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and a little coloring. Add this paste and rest of coloring to the creamed mixture. Add buttermilk, salt, and flour, alternating. Add vanilla, vinegar, and soda mix. Mix well. Pour in 2 round cake pans. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Frost with Butter Frosting.

BUTTER FROSTING:

1 c. milk
3 tbsp. flour

Cook in double boiler until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 cup butter until fluffy. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix 1 tablespoon flour mixture with sugar mix and gradually add the rest, beating thoroughly. Beat at full speed 2 minutes. Be sure the flour and milk is completely cool before adding to cream mix. Frost cakes.
