LYE SOAP | |
11 c. melted fat 5 c. cold soft rainwater 1 can lye or leached ashes 1/2 c. liquid ammonia 1/2 c. Borax MATERIAL: 2 enamel pans Wooden spoon Card board box or wooden mold (15 x 18 inches) Strain fat into enamel pan. Pour rain water into second enamel pan. Add lye, ammonia and borax to rainwater. Stir rainwater mixture with wooden spoon until everything is dissolved and mixture is cooled to room temperature. Pour rain water, lye mixture into grease while stirring slowly. Stir and beat well as mixture thickens. Line mold with papers topped with wet cloth. Pour soap into mold. Cut into cakes after about 24 hours. Soap can be used in 10 to 12 days but is best if left to stand about 6 weeks. |
