LEMON MERINGUE BAR COOKIES 
1/2 c. (1/4 lb.) soft butter
1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 c. reg. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. grated lemon peel
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
Walnut halves

Cream the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar. Beat in the egg yolks until blended. Sift flour; measure and sift with the salt. Beat into creamed mixture. Add lemon peel. Spread this mixture evenly in greased 8 inch square pan and bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Beat the egg whites until they form stiff, moist peaks; gradually beat in the granulated sugar until well blended. Stir in the chopped walnuts. Spread meringue over the baked layer.

Bake in a hot 400 degree oven for 5 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool in pan. Cut bars, and top each with a walnut half. Make about 9 bars.
