BUTTERMILK COOKIES 
2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
4 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Blend together flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg, set aside. Dissolve baking soda in sour or buttermilk, set aside. Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs; beat well and add vanilla. To this, alternately add flour and milk mixture. Drop by spoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 18 to 20 minutes.

NOTE: Buttermilk powder can be used.

NOTE: To sour milk, add 1 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar to milk and let sit for a while.
