2 c. brown sugar 1 c. shortening 3 eggs (add one at a time) 4 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Pinch of salt Mix together brown sugar, shortening, eggs, add 4 cups flour, soda and cinnamon and salt. Chill dough. FILLING: 1 lb. dates, cut fine 1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 c. milk 1/2 c. chopped nuts Pinch of salt 1 1/2 c. water Cook filling until blended. Cool. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick and spread with cooled date filling. Roll up like jelly roll. Freeze, slice and bake at 375 degrees. This recipe won grand champion at Polk County Fair when I was 13 years old. I almost put i cough syrup (Rawleighs) instead of vanilla. Mother stopped me just in time! |
