DATE PINWHEEL COOKIES 
2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 c. dates, cut in pieces
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. chopped nuts

To make date filling combine dates, sugar and water in saucepan and cook over low heat until thick, stirring constantly. Cool thoroughly. Add nuts. Mix together the butter, brown sugar, egg and vanilla. Add the flour, soda, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Roll 1/2 of dough on floured surface to a 10 x 8 inch rectangle. Spread with 1/2 of the filling. Roll up as for a jelly roll starting with the 10 inch side. Wrap in waxed paper or foil. Repeat with remainign dough and filling. Chill at least 2 hours. Cut into slices 1/4 inch thick and place on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Dough and filling can be frozen and taken out as needed. It is easy to slice when frozen.
