1 c. sugar
1 c. shortening (or mix with butter)
1 egg, unbeaten
2 c. flour, unsifted
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix in order of ingredients given. Stir well. Make into small balls. Roll in sugar and place on well greased cookie sheet. Flatten slightly. Bake about 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
