VICTORIAN APPLESAUCE CAKE 
2 c. all-purpose flour minus 2 tbsp.
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs (unbeaten)
3/4 c. dates, chopped
3/4 c. raisins, chopped
3/4 c. nuts, chopped

Topping:

1/4 c. nuts
2 tbsp. sugar

Sift flour, soda, salt, cocoa and spices into mixing bowl. Add shortening and applesauce. Beat 150 strokes; add eggs. Beat 250 strokes. Add dates, raisins and nuts. Mix and pour into tube pan. Sprinkle topping over batter.

Bake at 350°F for 25 to 35 minutes in oblong 10 x 10 x 2 pan.
