2 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 lg. egg
1 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
1/2 c. hot water
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. cloves
2 1/2 c. flour

Cream sugar and butter together. Sift together dry ingredients. Add applesauce and egg to creamed sugar and butter. Alternate adding water and dry ingredients, mixing well. Beat for 2 minutes on high. Bake in loaf pan (greased and floured) at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until done. FOR FRUIT CAKE: Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts, candied fruit and cut up dates before baking.
