SMOKY BACON BURGERS 
1 lb. very lean ground beef
1 egg
1/2 c. finely chopped onion
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/2 to 1 tsp. liquid smoke flavoring
4 slices bacon
4 lettuce leaves
4 tomato slices
4 toasted hamburger buns

Combine beef, egg, onion, salt, black pepper and liquid smoke, blending well. Divide into quarters. Shape each quarter into a thick patty. Wrap a strip of bacon around outside of each patty. Hold with a toothpick.

Place burgers on oiled broiler rack. Broil 5-6 inches from source of heat for 5-8 minutes on each side or until meat is done to your liking. To serve, put lettuce and tomato on toasted hamburger buns. Top with cooked patties (removing toothpicks first).
