APPLE BUTTER CAKE 
CAKE:

1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 c. apple butter
2 1/2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. each salt, baking soda, cinnamon & nutmeg
1 c. sour milk
1/2 c. apple butter

Cream Crisco and sugar; beat in eggs. When the mixture is fluffy, add 1 cup apple butter. Sift all dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. (Add sour milk alternately with dry ingredients to creamed mixture.) Bake in 2 (1/2") round layer pans. (Greased and floured.) Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool. Add frosting and apple butter. Spread bottom layer with 1/4 cup apple butter. Top with 1 cup frosting, add top layer. Frost the remaining cake. Swirl 1/4 cup remaining apple butter on top to give a marbled effect.

FROSTING:

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine all but vanilla in a double boiler. Beat 7 minutes. Should hold stiff peaks. Add vanilla.
