HEARTY VEGETABLE SOUP 
1 c. lentils
1 onion, chopped
1-2 c. tomato sauce
2 cloves garlic
1 c. barley
2 c. each cooked green beans, kidney beans, chick peas
4 stalks celery
3 carrots, sliced
1 c. elbow macaroni, or any sm. macaroni

Use a 7-8 quart pot. Saute onions and garlic. Add lentils, barley and enough water to cover. Cook about 30-45 minutes. Barley absorbs lots of water. Keep an eye on the pot and add water if necessary. Add everything else, except macaroni, and some extra water. Cook for about one hour. Put in macaroni last 10-15 minutes.

Great on a cold day with homemade corn bread. This is what I bring to a house with a new baby, or often to a Shiva.
