STOVE TOP CUSTARD 
4 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 quart milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg

Beat until thick, 4 eggs. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Beat until sugar dissolves. Scald 1 quart of milk. Add milk to eggs slowly, stirring. Cook in top of double boiler, stirring much of time so eggs will not separate.

Cook's Note: Cook until mixture coats the back of a wooden spoon; you should be able to draw a line with your finger across the custard on the spoon that doesn't fill in.

Add vanilla, salt and nutmeg.

Cool in bowl. Cover.
