MARY'S APPLE BARS | |
At least 8 Granny apples, sliced (or any tart apple) 2 1/2 c. flour 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 c. shortening 1 egg yolk 2/3 c. milk 1 egg white 2 handfuls crushed corn flakes or bread crumbs 3/4 c. sugar Mix flour, sugar, salt, shortening as for pie dough. In cup beat egg yolk a little and add 2/3 cup milk. Then add to the above mixture. SEE SPECIAL NOTE. Roll half dough to fit a 9 x 13 inch pan; sprinkle flakes or crumbs. Lay apples generously (which have been sugared and cinnamon to your taste). Roll remaining dough over. Brush top with slightly beaten egg white before baking. Bake at 400 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes. Cool and cut into 3 inch squares. NOTE: Put dough into refrigerator 30 minutes before rolling to make it easy to handle. |
