1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening with sugar; add egg and beat. Sift dry ingredients together and to the shortening mixture alternately with milk. Drop by teaspoonfuls on baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Cookies maybe sprinkled with sugar before baking or frosted afterwards.
