BROWN BREAD | |
4 tbsp. shortening 1 c. brown sugar 1 egg 1/4 c. New Orleans molasses 2 c. sour milk or buttermilk 2 c. graham flour 2 c. pastry flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking soda Blend shortening and sugar. Add egg and molasses. Stir in part of sour milk and then part of graham flour, continuing until all is added. Sift pastry flour, baking powder and salt together and add. Mix soda with small amount of cold water and stir into mixture. Chopped walnuts and raisins may be added, if desired. If mixture seems too stiff, a small amount of sweet milk may be added. Pour into 2 medium bread pans which have been greased and lightly floured. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes or 1 hour. |
