Do not refrigerate starter, do not use metal spoon. Keep covered (but don't use an air tight lid). To make starter, mix together: 1/3 c. sugar 1/3 c. milk Today is day #1: Do nothing else to the starter. Day #2, 3, 4: Stir the starter with a wooden spoon. Day #5: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk. Stir and pour into large Tupperware bowl. Day #6, 7, 8, 9: Stir with a wooden spoon. Day #10: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Pour 1 cup into 3 different containers and give to friends with the instructions. To the remaining batch, add: 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 3 eggs 1 c. sugar 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. baking soda You may add cloves, nutmeg, ginger, candied fruit, nuts or apples. Pour batter into 2 well greased and sugared loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans. |
