1/3 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 lg. egg
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
Pinch salt
3/4 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
5 apples, cored & cut into 8's

Beat shortening with sugar and add egg. Add flour, baking powder and salt mixed together, alternately with milk and vanilla. Put batter into greased 9 x 9 inch pan. Lay apple wedges down into batter overlapping so that they cover the batter. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar then cinnamon then lightly with cloves. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes until brown on edges. Cortland apples best. Freezes well.
