PEPER KOEK 
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. molasses
1/2 c. cold water
2 c. flour
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Pinch of salt

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs which have been beaten. Stir soda in molasses; add to mixture. Next, add water. Sift spices and salt with flour. Add mixture. Bake in slow oven about 40 minutes. Serve with hot sauce.

WARME SAUS VOOR KOEK (hot sauce of cake) :
2 c. brown sugar
2 tbsp. flour
2 c. hot water
2 tbsp. butter
2 tsp. vanilla

Mix brown sugar and flour together. Then add hot water. Boil and stir with wooden spoon continually until it thickens. Take from the fire and add butter and vanilla. Pour over cake.
