SLOVAK JAM SQUARES 
1/4 lb. butter or stick butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg yolks
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. nut meats
1/8 tsp. baking soda
2 egg whites
Plum butter or jam

Cream butter and sugar; add vanilla and egg yolks and cream together. Add sifted flour, baking powder and soda and mix. Gather up dough and knead a few times. Put in 8 x 8 inch or 9 x 9 inch pan and pat out dough to cover bottom. Spread dough with plum butter or jam. Over jam spread egg whites, stiffly beaten with 2 tablespoons sugar and sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes or until top is lightly browned. Cut in squares.
