TOP HAT COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
1 c. peanut butter
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
4 to 5 doz. chocolate "kisses"
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat shortening and peanut butter until creamy. Gradually add sugars, beating thoroughly, after each addition. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Mix remaining ingredients except for chocolate kisses and blend into peanut butter mixture.

Shape dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Roll balls of dough in granulated sugar and place on ungreased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake 10 minutes; then remove from oven and press a milk chocolate candy kiss into the center of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 2 to 5 minutes longer or until cookies are done.
