GERMAN KUCHEN WITH BERRY TOPPING 
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. plus 3 tbsp. sugar
1/4 c. soft shortening
2/3 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 egg
1 c. berries (blueberries or sliced strawberries)

Sift together first 3 ingredients plus 3/4 c. sugar. Add shortening, milk, vanilla, and 1/2 lemon rind. Beat with mixer on medium speed for 3 minutes. Add egg and beat another 2 minutes, turn into 8x8 pan and set aside. Lightly stir together berries, 3 tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon lemon rind. Sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes. Till lightly browned. Serve warm with berry sauce and whipped topping.
