GRANDMA'S SWEET PICKLES 
8 lbs. med. cucumbers
2 c. hydrated lime
2 gals. water
2 qts. vinegar (or less according to taste)
8 c. white sugar
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. whole cloves
1 tsp. mixed pickling spices
Green food coloring

Slice medium cucumbers in 1/4 inch slices. Pour solution of lime and water over cucumbers, letting them soak for 24 hours. Pour off lime water; rinse well and cover with fresh cold water. Let soak for 3 hours. Drain. Bring vinegar, sugar, and spices to a boil and pour over pickles. Let stand overnight. In the morning, gently simmer for 30 to 40 minutes. Add a few drops of coloring at this time. Pack in sterilized jars and seal.
