TOFFEE BARS 
1 c. butter
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 (6 oz.) pkg. (1 c.) semi-sweet chocolate pieces
1 c. chopped walnuts or pecans

Beat butter for 30 seconds; add brown sugar and beat until fluffy. Add egg yolk and vanilla; beat well. Gradually add flour to beat mixture, beat constantly. Stir in chocolate pieces and nuts. Press evenly in an ungreased 15 x 10 x 1 inch baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 15-18 minutes. Cut into bars while warm. Makes 48.

English Toffee Bars: Prepare toffee bars as above, except omit chocolate pieces and nuts in the dough; bake as directed. Immediately sprinkle chocolate pieces over top and let stand until softened; then spread evenly. Sprinkle with finely chopped nuts.
