DATE AND ORANGE SLICE BARS 
1/2 lb. dates
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. water

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 2 tbsp. hot water

Spread 1/2 of dough in bottom of 10x15 greased pan. Cover with 15 ounce package of orange slice candy, cut each in 3. Spread on date mixture over orange slices. Top with rest of dough. Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees.
